PATTAYA, Thailand – Rolando Bregente shot a 73, while Rianne Malixi scored a 79 on Friday to trail after the second round of the individual event of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games golf tournament at the Siam Country Club Rolling Hills.
Bregente registered a two-day total of 138, six shots behind leader Laopakdee Pongsapak after the Thai golfer shot a 66 on Friday. Sarasmut Parin of Thailand sizzled with a 64 for a two-day total of 137 for second place heading into moving day.
Malixi totaled 149 after two rounds, trailing leader Kaopattanaskul Kritchanya of Thailand by nine shots. The former US Girls and US Amateur champion is in a tie for seventh place after the second round.
After a steady start at the back nine where he had a bogey at the 13th and birdie at the 18th, Bregente bogeyed the final three, three-putting all of it including a lip-out.
The three bogeys came after Bregente eagled the sixth, making up for birdie-bogey to start the front nine.
Malixi had a triple bogey at the fifth and a double bogey on the eighth, dampening her chances of a podium in the individual event.
But Bregente and Malixi are unperturbed as they go to moving day.
“Babawi po ako sa last two. Kaya ko naman ‘yung course. ‘Yung mga putting ko lang na malapit, hindi pumapasok,” said Bregente.
“’Yung course very hard talaga kasi ‘yung mga pin, nasa slope,” added the Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon native.
“Nag-triple ako, hindi ko na nakuha ‘yung momentum ko. I was struggling to make amends throughout the whole round. I had the shots pero ‘yung placements ko sa course at sa greens were in really bad places so I was really hard to make up. I was getting too greedy for the pars and I ended up worse than bogey,” said Malixi.
“I just have to be myself. Be more patient. I was getting frustrated today. That dragged me down. I’ll focus shot by shot,” she added.
