The Philippines heads into the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok carrying a standard of esports excellence, with the nation’s pride rideing on their shoulders. For years, the Philippines has dominated the MLBB scene in Southeast Asia, and this time, the mission is crystal clear: bring home the gold and live up to that legacy.
The pursuit of greatness comes with pressure — and pressure makes for the best storylines. The women’s team, in particular, is hungry for redemption after settling for silver in the last edition of the SEA Games in 2023.
A legacy worth protecting
Since MLBB became an official medal event at the 2019 SEA Games, the Philippines has consistently topped the podium, establishing itself as a regional powerhouse.
Historically, the SIBOL MLBB Men’s squad has been unstoppable, claiming gold in 2019, repeating the feat in 2021 with a Blacklist International-led lineup, and striking gold again in 2023 with AP.Bren — the same roster that later went on to win the M5 World Championship that December.
The Philippines’ dominance looks unshakable heading into the 33rd SEA Games, especially with Karl “KarlTzy” Nepomuceno making his long-awaited return since the 2019 edition. In six years, the once-rookie prodigy has grown into an MLBB legend, collecting MPL crowns, two world titles, and now eyeing his second SEA Games gold.
In an exclusive interview with SPIN.ph, KarlTzy shared his excitement about returning to the SEA Games after six years, adding that he’s fully focused on helping the Philippines keep its gold streak alive.
“Sobrang saya kasi nakabalik ako dito sa SEA Games. Sobrang tagal na nung huli kong laro dito. Gusto ko manalo ulit! Sa sarili ko wala namang pressure, siguro ‘yung pinaka-pressure dito is ‘yung puro panalo ‘yung MLBB team sa SEA Games, puro gold, at ayoko putulin ‘yung streak na ‘yun,” KarlTzy said.
Fighting alongside KarlTzy are trusted teammates with proven chemistry: Alston “Sanji” Pabico (PHI. Pabico), Kiel “Oheb” Soriano (PHI. Soriano), Sanford “Sanford” Vinuya (PHI. Vinuya), and Jaypee “Jaypee” Dela Cruz (PHI. Dela Cruz).
But there’s also someone new, John Carlo “Caloy” Roma (PHI. Roma), one of MPL Philippines’ rising stars who has a lot to offer as a roamer and sixth man.
The undying rivalry
Staying on top means having biggeer targets on their backs, and at the SEA Games, SIBOL will have familiar foes gunning for them.
Indonesia has always been the Philippines’ fiercest rival in MLBB, dating back to the 2019 SEA Games when the two nations clashed in a thrilling best-of-five finals, with the Philippines narrowly claiming a 3-2 victory.
The 2021 SEA Games saw Johnmar “OhMyV33NUS” Villaluna (PHI. Villaluna) guided the SIBOL MLBB Men’s team to a decisive 3-1 win over Indonesia, bringing home another gold and solidifying the country’s dominance.
But Indonesia isn’t the only threat. Malaysia has steadily improved thanks to its growing MPL scene that can surprise even the most seasoned teams.
Can Indonesia finally break through, or will the Philippines extend its three-peat gold streak to four in the MLBB Men’s category?
Hungry for redemption
If the SIBOL MLBB Men’s team is defending legacy, the women’s squad is chasing theirs.
Their silver-medal finish in the 32nd SEA Games still stings — falling just one game short against Indonesia in a nail-biting grand finals, 2-3.
Returning to the SEA Games, the core women’s lineup remains intact: Gwyneth "Ayanami" Diagon (PHI. Diagon), Mery "Meraaay" Vivero (PHI. Vivero), Sheen "Shinoa" Perez (PHI. Perez), Kaye "Keishi" Alpuerto (PHI. Alpuerto) and Rica “Amoree” Amores (PHI Amores). TLPH’s Clarisse “CLA” Cordova (PHI. Cordova) completes the roster as sixth man under the guidance of coach Salman “KingSalman” Macarambon.
The challenge is real: the 33rd SEA Games could see SIBOL MLBB women facing Indonesia, whose female squad, consisting of Team Vitality, recently achieved the hard-to-reach Golden Road milestone.
