GILAS Pilipinas completed a perfect run to the men's basketball 3x3 gold medal in the 30th Southeast Asian Games by demolishing Indonesia, 21-9, in the one-game final on Monday at The Arena in San Juan City.
CJ Perez saved his best for last as he unleashed 10 points to cap an eight-game win run for Gilas and complete a Philippine sweep of the gold medals in the inaugural 3x3 tournament of the biennial showpiece.
The Columbian Dyip star was hitting every shot in front of his home crowd as Gilas men’s team put away the Indonesians with still 2:25 minutes to spare when Mo Tautuaa's two-pointer put it at the 20-point mark.
The easy win capped a golden double for the Philippines, which ruled the women's 3x3 tournament after a vengeful 17-13 win over Thailand in the final.
Chris Newsome, Jason Perkins and Tautuaa also delivered for Gilas, which easily won all six games in the eliminations before dominating Thailand, 21-11, in the knockout semifinal earlier in the day.
"The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) congratulates Chris Newsome, Jason Perkins, CJ Perez, and Moala Tautuaa for winning the gold and thanks them for their sacrifices in the preparation for the SEA Games," said SBP president Al S. Panlilio.
"The dominant run would not have been possible without the leadership of PBA commissioner Willie Marcial and the help of the PBA Board of Governors," he added. "The victory of the Gilas Pilipinas men's 3x3 not only stamps our class as still the kings of basketball in the region, but also shows that we're moving in the right direction in the half court game."
Meanwhile, elims second placer Vietnam vented its ire on Thailand, 21-17, to win the bronze medal.
