Gilas Pilipinas plays medal contender Thailand a day after KL SEA Games opening ceremony

GILAS Pilipinas opens its campaign in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games against Thailand on August 20 at the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

The Filipinos face the Thais in a 9:30 p.m. match-up in Group A, according to the schedule obtained from the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

The Nationals take a break the following day before returning to action on August 22 at 6 p.m. against Myanmar, which Gilas Pilipinas beat by 107 points in the Seaba Championship in Manila.

The Philippines battles host Malaysia on August 23 also at 6 p.m.

The semifinals will be played on August 25 and the final the next day.

Kiefer Ravena, Baser Amer, Kevin Ferrer, Troy Rosario and Almond Vosotros are set to return to the SEA Games after helping the country win the gold in Singapore, while boosting the squad in the Kuala Lumpur Games are Ray Parks and Christian Standhardinger.

The SBP also submitted the names of Kobe Paras, Mike Tolomia, Carl Bryan Cruz, Raymar Jos and Von Pessumal to the Philippine Olympic Committee as members of the men's basketball team to the SEA Games.

Since basketball was included in 1977, the Philippines has always won gold in the SEA Games except in 1989 when they lost to Malaysia and in 2005 when the country was suspended by Fiba.
