KUALA LUMPUR - Gilas Pilipinas opens its Southeast Asian Games campaign on Sunday night in a game against Thailand at the start of the men's basketball competitions at the MABA Stadium.
Gametime is set at 9:30 p.m.
The core of the team has played together during the Jones Cup in Chinese Taipei but only had nine practices when it regrouped to prepare for the defense of the SEAG gold medal.
With the campaign coming on the heels of Gilas' defeat to Korea in the Fiba Asia Cup quarterfinals, stand-in coach Jong Uichico warned his players that anything can happen on the court.
"Of course, there is always that chance na suwertehin talaga (ang kalaban) ng super. Of course, you don't hope that. You hope na ikaw ang suwertehin pero huwag swertehin 'yung kalaban," said Uichico.
Thailand is certainly capable of pulling off an upset with a team reinforced by Thai-American Tyler Lamb, who played for the Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions in the Asean Basketball League.
"That's why we want to be as consistent as possible," said Uichico.
Fil-German cager Christian Standhardinger is expected to suit up for Gilas on Sunday after arriving on Saturday night following his stint in the Fiba Asia Cup in Lebanon.
Mac Belo is also expected to play as a replacement to Carl Bryan Bruz, who stayed behind in Lebanon to finish Gilas' campaign in the Fiba Asia Cup.
