Coaches do extra work as Gilas cadets prepare to face mystery rival Thailand in SEA Games semifinals

    Jun 13, 2015

SINGAPORE — Coaches Tab Baldwin and Nash Racela missed the bus and had to take the train.

They even had to be guided by a few Singapore-based Filipinos finding their way back to the hotel on Friday, according to DZSR Sports Radio reporter Ria Arevalo.

There’s a reason for this. The Philippines faces Thailand in the semifinals and the two coaches opted to stay and watch the late game at the OCBC Arena featuring the Thais, who didn’t send a team to the recent Southeast Asian Basketball Association championship, a qualifier for the 2015 Fiba-Asia Championship. It is enough reason to be wary against the Thais.

“Nagtago ang Thailand nung Seaba,” said Gilas cadets skipper Kiefer Ravena.

Thailand lost to Singapore, 65-58, in the Southeast Asian Games on Friday night to settle for second spot in Pool B, to arrange a semifinal pairing against the Philippines, which topped Pool A with a 3-0 record following a 126-21 win over Timor Leste.

The Thais and Filipinos play at 6 p.m. on Sunday

The Gilas Pilipinas cadets assured they won’t be complacent going into the match against Thailand, which had a 2-1 win-loss slate in the preliminaries.

“Siguro kailangan lang namin paghandaan. Hindi kami puwedeng magkumpiyansa,” said Ravena.

Singapore faces Indonesia at 8 p.m. in the other semifinal game.
