IN an huge development, the swimming competitions of the 30th Southeast Asian Games will now serve as one of the qualifiers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The international swimming federation Fina has sent a communique to the Philippine Swimming Inc. about its decision to make the Nov. 30 to Dec. 10 meet a qualification procedure for the Tokyo Games.
The swimming competitions will be held from Dec. 2 to 6 at the New Clark City.
“We have the pleasure to inform you that FINA has approved the following competitions as meets where swimmers can achieve the FINA ‘A’ and ‘B’ swimming qualifying standard times,” part of the letter read sent to PSI by FINA Executive Director Cornel Marculescu.
“We would appreciate receiving the official results by email (firstname.lastname@example.org) immediately after the conclusion of the above mentioned meets.”
PSI president Lani Velasco welcomed the move by FINA as it adds color and glamour to the country’s hosting of the SEA Games for the first time in 15 years.
“We are very grateful that FINA has approved the 30th Southeast Asian Games as a qualifying meet for the Tokyo Olympics,” she said in a statement.
“This unprecedented event is a great opportunity for our swimmers in the attainment of our goals in Philippine swimming,” she added. “Let us not waste this chance by infighting and bickering, but instead work in a spirit of unity and cooperation.”
