THE Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Philsgoc) is confident Filoil Flying V Centre will be able to meet the standards of hosting the SEA Games basketball competition.
Phisgoc executive director Ramon ‘Tats’ Suzara said Filoil management expressed its readiness to host the SEA Games following the move to transfer the basketball competitions of the biennial meet to the 5,000-seater San Juan venue from the Mall of Asia Arena, which can house more than 20,000 spectators.
Phisgoc, however, will once again speak with Mall of Asia Arena management next week as the venue remains the first option for the hosting of the SEA Games set Nov. 30 to Dec. 11 in Manila.
Suzara also said the Filoil venue is capable of hosting the event even as transfer was met with criticisms from the basketball fans.
“Sa Malaysia and Singapore, may mga venue ng basketball and volleyball na maliliit din naman,” said Suzara.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has requested for a bigger venue to accomodate fans as PBA players will be suiting up for the biennial meet for the first time in history.
Suzara said Filoil management has agreed to the installation of temporary structures around the arena and the covering of its advertisement materials around the venue.
“The Filoil management is now discussing to the sponsors to understand that this should be covered y the SEA Games branding. They would understand because this is a national commitment. They will talk to their sponsors na this is needed. Naiintindihan naman nila,” said Suzara.
