BANGKOK – The Filipinas advanced to the semifinals of 33rd Southeast Asian Games women’s football after routing Malaysia, 6-0, on Thursday at the IPE Chonburi Stadium.
The Philippines progressed after also getting some help from reigning champion Vietnam, which beat Myanmar, 2-0, in the other match at the Chonburi Daikin Stadium.
Prior to matchday, the Filipinas needed at least three goals to progress, in the event of a Vietnam win over Myanmar.
Vietnam, Philippines, and Myanmar ended the group stage with six points on two victories and one defeat, but Vietnam and Philippines clinched semifinal berths on superior goal difference with +8 and +6, respectively.
The Filipinas finished second in Group B and arranged a semifinal battle against Thailand, which topped Group A with two wins over Indonesia and Singapore.
Vietnam battles Indonesia in the semifinals to be played on Sunday at the Chonburi Daikin Stadium.
Alexa Pino scored a hat trick, including one before halftime to get things going for the Filipinas. She struck again in the 53rd before scoring again on penalties in the 70th.
Jessika Cowart converted in the 68th, Ariana Markey in the 85th, and Anicka Castaneda in the 96th, as well, for the Philippines
