Filipinas' historic win highlights nine-gold PH day at SEA Games

CHONBURI, Thailand – The Philippines was winning gold medals from morning ‘til the late evening in the contingent’s most productive day at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games.

The PH athletes snagged nine gold medals in Day 8 highlighted by the three from the triathlon relay teams and the historic shootout victory of the Filipinas over Vietnam in the women's football finals.

The Philippine delegation, however, stayed at sixth place in the overall championship with a 37-55-120 gold-silver-bronze tally.

Kira Ellis, Kim Mangrobang, and Raven Alcoseba collected the first three gold medals for triathlon to jumpstart the day early in the morning, before the Filipinas wrapped up the night with a dramatic win over reigning four-time defending champion Vietnam, 6-5, on penalties after a scoreless regulation.

The men’s relay team of Fer Casares, Aki Lorbes, and Matthew Hermosa, and the mixed relay team of Casares, Ellis, Alcoseba, and Kim Remolino completed the sweep of the events for the Philippines in triathlon.

Muay, a sport that originated in Thailand, accounted for two Filipino gold medals courtesy of Islay Bomogao and LJ Yasay.

Sibol ruled the Mobile Legends Bang Bang event in esports, with the other gold medal winners coming from Dhenver John Castillo in the men’s windsurfing U19 IQ foil, and Melvin Sacay in the men’s pentathlon laser run.

The Philippines also lined itself up for more gold medals in the final two days of competition after Eumir Marcial, Aira Villegas, EJ Baricuatro, and Flint Jara advanced to the boxing finals in their respective events.

    Some of the silver winners include Noelito Jose Jr. in the men’s epee, the mixed jumbo doubles U21 team of Jonathan Reyes and Aerra JC Mae Rolano in squash, the men’s jumbo doubles U21 team of Reyes and Christopher Buraga, and the Sibol e-sports team in Mobile Legends Bang Bang.
