TWO will be the final count of gold medals for the Philippine fencing team as it bombed out on the last day of the fencing competitions in the 30th Southeast Asian Games Sunday at World Trade Center.
Neither of the men's epee and women's sabre teams were able to reach the top, and the the Philippines ends with only half of the federation's gold medal prediction of four.
Lucky for the women's sabre team, they still came away with the bronze.
The squad, made up of Jylyn Nicanor, Queen Denise Dalmacio, Allaine Nicole Cortey, and Kemberly Camahalan, fell to Thailand, 45-30 in the semis.
Not even Nicanor's late run could hurdle what was already a big lead in favor of the Thais, relegating the Filipinos to the final step in the podium.
The same, however, couldn't be said for the men's epee team.
Bannered by Noelito Jose Jr., Lee Eigran Ergina, and Darylle Joshua Lumahan, the Philippines exited in the quarterfinals as it lost to Singapore, 45-22.
Nicanor in the women's individual sabre and the women's epee team were the only ones to take home the gold in the biennial meet.
The Philippines also took home two silver medals and seven bronze finishes to its final haul.
