EFREN “Bata” Reyes will compete for flag and country once again in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games but his close friend and fellow pool legend Francisco “Django” Bustamante missed out.
Reyes is part of the 11-member billiards and snooker team for the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games this year, claiming the spot for English billiards.
Bustamante, however, failed to make the cut in the 9-ball pool eliminations held for the selection of the national team bound for Kuala Lumpur.
"Natalo siya sa elimination. Pang-anim nga siya," said Billiard Sports Confederation of the Philippines president Robert Mananquil of Bustamante. "Pati si Efren, sumali sa (9-ball) pool (eliminations), natalo nga lang."
Reyes has won bronze in carom one-cushion in three straight editions of the biennial meet but the event is not part in the SEA Games calendar this year.
Efren Reyes and Francisco Dela Cruz will play in the English billiards singles and doubles.
Bustamante will still be part of the delegation as team leader and representative of billiards patron Aristeo “Putch” Puyat.
Johann Chua and Carlo Biado will compete in the men's 9-ball singles, while Dennis Orcollo and Warren Kiamco will see action in the men's 9-ball doubles.
In the women's division, Chezka Centeno will defend her women's 9-ball singles gold and will be joined in the event by Rubilen Amit. Centeno and Amit will also play in the women's 9-ball doubles.
Jefrey Roda and Basil Al-Shajjar were the top two in the snooker eliminations and will see action in the snooker singles, while Roda and Alvin Barbero will compete in the snooker doubles.
