Edmar Tacuel delivers first pencak silat gold for Philippines in 30th SEA Games

SUBIC, Zambales — Pencak Silat registered its first gold for the Philippines in the 30th Southeast Asian Games courtesy of Edmar Tacuel on Monday at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center here.

First time national team player Tacuel scored 470 points (Accuracy 296, Firmness 174) to rule the Seni Tunggal Male event.

The 20-year old Iloilo native started in arnis in 2012 before he cross trained to pencak silat and joined the national team.

    “Happy ako nakakuha ako ng gold medal sa laro ng pencak silat,” said Tacuel, who’s a proud son of a farmer and a housewife.

    Muhammad Iqbal Bin Abdul Rahman of Singapore bagged the silver medal with 461 points (Accuracy 293, Firmness 168) and Dino Bima Sulistianto copped the bronze with 460 points (Accuracy 288, Firmness 172).

    The Philippines is set to see action in the Male Ganda and Male Regu for a possible first day sweep.
