Delgaco, Paraon deliver rowing's first gold medal at SEA Games

PATTAYA, Thailand - Paris Olympian Joanie Delgaco teamed up with Kristine Paraon to bag the women's double sculls title for rowing's first gold medal in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games.

Delgaco and Paraon clocked eight minutes, 16.976 seconds to win the gold, nearly five seconds ahead of Thailand’s Sukkaew Rariwan and Chaempudsa Parisa with a time of 8:21.634.

Substitute Feiza Jane Lenton also got the gold medal for the Philippines.

Nguyen Thi Van Anh and Pham Thi Bich Ngoc of Vietnam came in with a bronze-medal finish with a time of 8:26.447.

The gold was the earliest, thus far, for the Philippines’ campaign in this SEA Games to start Day 7 on a high note.

Delgaco and Paraon led the rest of the way in the 2000m course at the Royal Thai Navy Rowing and Canoeing Training Center in the outskirts of this city.

    Delgaco won her second doubles event of his SEA Games career, adding to the 2019 lightweight single sculls gold.

    The 27-year-old Delgaco will return on Wednesday to compete in the lightweight single sculls, an event where she had a silver in the 2022 edition in Hanoi.

    Tokyo Olympian Cris Nievarez bagged the bronze in the men’s single sculls with a time of 8:22.121.
