NEW CLARK CITY – Mother knows best.
Patricia Deiparine, mother of Southeast Asian Games gold medal winner James Deiparine, assured that her son will continue to represent the country in future international meets.
She said her son ‘will not retire yet’ following his record-breaking performance in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke on Wednesday at the New Clark City Acquatics Center.
The 26-year-old Deiparine hinted that ‘this may be my last SEA Games,’ after giving Philippine swimming its first SEA Games gold in the last 10 years.
“He has more to do for the Philippines and for everyone who has supported him,” said the elder Deiparine in a text message to Philippine Swimming Inc. president Lani Velasco on Thursday.
“My kids asked me how we can thank you (Velasco) for everything you have done,” Deiparine said. “We love you and may God continue to bless you.”
The young Deiparine expressed a desire to take up law and take the bar once he's done with his athletic career. The father of the Fil-Am swimmer happens to be a lawyer.
Ecstatic over the historic moment provided by Deiparine, Velasco is looking forward to another possible gold from the new star of Philippine swimming and the rest of the pool contingent.
Deiparine still has one event left in the 50-meter breaststroke, where he bagged a silver medal during the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
