SINGAPORE — Daniel Parantac bagged wushu’s first gold medal in the 28th Southeast Asian Games - and the Philippines' third - after ruling the men’s optional taijijian event held at the Expo Hall.
Parantac, a silver medalist in last year’s Asian Games, scored 9.71 points in the form event to beat Jack Chang Loh of Singapore (9.69) Julius Kurniawan of Indonesia settled for the bronze with a score of 9.68.
Parantac’s gold came after he settled for a silver medal in the men’s duel event weapons with John Keithley Chan, and Norlence Ardee Catolico.
Prior to the SEA Games, the 24-year-old Parantac expressed confidence in winning a gold this year.
“Nasa 99 percent,” Parantac told Spin.ph, weeks before he left for the Lion City for the SEA Games. “Malakas pa rin ‘yung kalaban pero may mga bago silang athletes. Nag-retire na kasi ‘yung mga kabalan ko dati. Puro mga bata na.”
