CJ Concepcion's gallant stand fell short in the finals of men's individual sabre of the fencing competitions in the 30th Southeast Asian Games Tuesday at World Trade Center.

Silver is the best the fencer from University of the East could settle for as he bowed to Thanh An Vu of Vietnam, 15-13 in the gold medal match.

Vu, the gold medalist in the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, got to a 12-8 advantage but not before Concepcion could rally, making the match, 13-12 late.

Yet the Vietnamese's might was just too much, pulling off the victory that kept him on his throne for men's sabre.

Samantha Kyle Catantan also added to the Philippines' medal haul with a bronzre medal in the women's individual foil.

But that triumph was at the expense of his teammate Maxine Esteban, who she edged in the quarterfinals, 15-11.

The 17-year-old Catantan attempted to get back to the podium, but she still couldn't hurdle rival eventual gold medalist Amita Marie Berthier of Singapore in their semifinal duel.
