World champ Yulo given honor of lighting cauldron during SEA Games opening

CALOY Yulo has been named the torch bearer while six athletes led by Hidilyn Diaz will carry the Philippine flag in the opening ceremony of the 30th Southeast Asian Games on November 30 at the Philippine Arena.

Yulo, who won a gold in the Artistic Gymnastics World Championship recently, has been given the honor of doing the traditional lighting of the cauldron that will signify the formal start of the biennial conclave.

Diaz, meanwhile, will be one of the flag bearers of the Philippines during the parade of athletes and she will be joined by pole vaulter EJ Obiena, boxers Eumir Marcial and Nesthy Petecio, skateboarder Margielyn Didal, and judoka Kiyomi Watanabe.

    The seven accomplished athletes will lead the 1,115-strong delegation that will be bidding to win the overall championship in the SEA Games that will be held in Clark, Metro Manila, Subic, and other parts of the country.

    A total of 530 gold medals from 56 sports will be at stake in what is considered as the biggest SEA Games ever in terms of the number of events.
