Send only the best to SEA Games, PSC chairman Ramirez urges sports officials

    Jan 6, 2017
“Let’s just send athletes with the great chance of winning medals in the SEA Games,” PSC chairman Butch Ramirez tells representatives from NSAs.

PHILIPPINE Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez urged national sports associations (NSAs) to field their best bets for the Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia.

In Friday’s PSC directional meeting in Tagaytay City, Ramirez said NSAs should screen the athletes they plan to send to the biennial showpiece before recommending them to the SEA Games Task Force.

“Let’s just send athletes with the great chance of winning medals in the SEA Games,” said Ramirez in his discussion with the NSAs on Friday.

Thirty-three out of the 57 NSAs sent representatives to the two-day directional meeting where the PSC and the NSAs discussed ways on how to strengthen sports in the country.

The PSC also presented its Philippine Sports Institute to the NSAs, with PSI national training director Marc Velasco unveiled the plan to discover prospects from aged seven to 16 years old.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio welcomed the meeting, saying it kept the NSAs updated on what path the PSC wants for Philippine sports.

“I think it is great kasi it’s about accountability,” said Panlilio. “If we can clarify each role on what to do, we can go in one direction.”

“Maraming problema ang Philippine sports. Hopefully, with this first meeting, we will have dialogue on how we can improve Philippine sports. This is a great initiative by the chairman to put everything on the table,” he added.
