PHILIPPINE Sports Commission chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez is open to have Davao City and nearby areas hold the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and he has submitted a letter to President Rodrigo Duterte asking for a letter of government guarantee.
A guarantee from the Office of the President will be a proof of the government’s support to the SEA Games hosting in the Philippines, and the Philippine Olympics Committee hopes to secure it in time for the SEAG Federation Council meeting this weekend.
The POC suggested that Davao City be the main hub of the forthcoming SEA Games in the Philippines, a suggestion that is supported by Ramirez. The PSC chairman, however, admitted Manila remains as the most logical choice to host the SEA Games.
“Kung kaya ng Davao, why not? But if we want to be conservative, it should be Manila,” said Ramirez during a press briefing on Monday afternoon at the PSC office.
Ramirez said potential venues in Davao for the SEA Games include the still-being-constructed University of the Philippines-Mindanao sports complex, University of Mindanao, and the King Dome, owned by the Kingdom of Jesus Christ Above Every Name Christian sect, as potential venues.
“I’ve asked commissioner Arnold Agustin and some engineers to visit Davao to assess the facilities because we have three years to prepare,” said Ramirez.
Ramirez, however, said he isn’t inclined to force Davao to host the SEA Games if facilities are not ready.
“Hindi ugali ni Digong na ’yung ipe-please mo siya. Kailangan sa Davao hindi dahil sa he wants to,” said Ramirez.
