MMA fighter Brandon Vera will be part of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, but not as a competitor.
The ONE heavyweight champion will be part of the Philippine sambo team as team manager, according to a source, as the sport makes it debut in the 30th Southeast Asian Games.
Sambo is a martial art which has its origins in Russia. Eleven gold medals are at stake in the competition to be held at the Angeles University Foundation in Angeles, Pampanga.
ONE fighter Rene Catalan is also part of the national sambo team that will vie for a gold medal in the sport, 14 years after topping the SEA Games sanshou (now sanda) 48-kg event on home soil in 2005.
Former MMA fighter Mark Striegl is also part of the sambo team.
