PHILIPPINE Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino has a conservative goal for all national sports associations in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games – win at least two gold medals.
Appearing in the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at Amelie Hotel Manila, Tolentino explained that if all NSAs can capture at least a pair of gold medals, it will bring the hosts' tally to more than a hundred.
“Logic and mathematical computations, 56 times two is 112. Magbigay na lang kayo ng two each,” said Tolentino during the public service forum.
Tolentino said reaching 112 gold medals is achievable, knowing that other NSAs will also be able to get more than two mints in the SEA Games.
“Huwag naman magagalit ‘yung hindi maka-attain nito. There would be sports na baka hindi mag-deliver. Let’s face reality. (Let’s say) 50 times two equals 100. So may pondo na tayong 100. Idagdag mo ‘yung mga makaka-deliver ng more than two. You mean to say gymnastics, hindi makaka-deliver ng two? You mean to say boxing, hindi makaka-deliver ng more than two?”
Tolentino also said other sports that were added to the program that ballooned to 56 will also give the Philippines more gold medals this year.
“And the new sports. Kaya nga natin dinagdagan ng new sports. Eto ‘yung tinatago nating baraha. Ngayon, hindi na natin maitatago. Let’s reveal it now. (Like) arnis, 20 events, hanggang dalawa lang ba made-deliver nun?” said Tolentino.
“Let’s face reality. Hanggang dalawa nga lang conservatively. Kasi napabayaan po ‘yung mga mandatory sports na aquatics and athletics. Kung lumagpas ng dalawa, well and good, better, thank you very much,” said Tolentino.
“’Yung dalawa, magandang balita ‘yun kapag lumagpas ng dalawa, better,” said Tolentino. “Congratulations and thank you very much. Kapag lumagpas ng two, four to five, nag-improve. That’s reality on aquatics and athletics. Kapag sinabi nila, athletics can deliver six, well and good. Thank you very much."
