    Anthony Beram becomes Philippines' first double-gold winner by ruling 400m run

    KUALA LUMPUR - Anthony Beram emerged as the first double-gold medalist for the Philippines in the 29th Southeast Asian Games after ruling the men's 400-meter run at the Bukit Jalil Stadium on Thursday night.

    A day after he taking his first gold medal in the Games in the 200m run, Beram once again dominated the field in a longer distance to win with a time of 46.39 seconds.

    "Just trying my best," said Beram, still gasping for breath when he spoke to reporters at the finish line. "I'm just happy I was able to get it done."

    The New York-based Fil-American admitted he was feeling "quite heavy" for the race perhaps due to the effects of having to compete for the second straight day.

    "I'm really feeling quite heavy before the race. I knew I have to give my 100,000 percent to win. I just thank God for giving me the strength," said Beram.

    In an afternoon race, Mervin Guarte won a bronze medal for the Philippines in the men's 1,500m.

    Guarte clocked three minutes, 53.68 seconds to capture the bronze medal. Duong Van Thai of Vietnam took the gold in 3:51.44, while Yothin Yaprajan of Thailand grabbed silver with a 3:53.41 clocking.
