VETERAN journalist Clarito L. Samson died on Wednesday after a heart attack. He was 52.
Samson, who studied at Lyceum, started as a sportswriter for the Philippines News Agency and rose through the ranks, becoming the first sports editor of the national daily newspaper Malaya. He also edited the sports pages of the defunct Today newspaper. In between, he wrote for the Manila Bulletin and Tempo.
He later joined government as a presidential assistant during the term of President Fidel V. Ramos.
After his government stint, Samson tried his hand at sports promoting and successfully staged several fights featuring then world champion Luisito Espinosa.
Samson’s last stint in government service was as a special consultant for the Land Transportation Office. He later served as special consultant of the Philippine Olympic Committee.
At the time of his death, he was a sports columnist for Malaya-Business Insight.
His remains were cremated on Thursday at Loyola Guadalupe where the ashes will be kept until Saturday.
