PHILIPPINE Army clinched a quarterfinal berth in the Shakey's V-League Season 10 Open Conference after defeating Meralco in straight sets, 25-21, 25-16, 25-18, on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.
Mary Jean Balse came away with 16 points, from eight spikes, three blocks, and five service aces, while Jovelyn Gonzaga, the youngest player in the team at 21, contributed 13 for the Lady Troopers.
Army’s fourth win in five outings came after its straight set loss to Cagayan Valley last week, 9-25, 16-25, 20-25.
"Ang gusto namin ipakita na bumalik na 'yung laro namin," said Army coach Rico de Guzman. "Mahirap kasi na walang setter."
Veteran setter Tina Salak missed the Lady Troopers’ game against the Lady Rising Suns due to health reasons, but suited up for the team against the Power Spikers and finished with six points.
Maureen Penetrante-Ouano and Chinese import Coco Wang had 11 points apiece for Meralco, which fell to an even 3-3 record.
