Individual awards for Valdez and Co. are nice, but Gorayeb focused on ultimate prize

    May 25, 2015

PROUD as he may be with the individual awards won by his players, PLDT Home Ultera coach Roger Gorayeb would rather see the team go home with the ultimate one in the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Open Conference.

The man tasked to call the shots for the national women’s team to the Southeast Asian Games said he wants nothing less than the championship for the Ultra Fast Hitters to cap the awards three of his players won on Sunday prior to Game Two of the Finals between PLDT and Philippine Army.

“Maraming salamat (sa individual awards), but nothing is more important than the championship trophy,” said Gorayeb.

PLDT top player Alyssa Valdez ran away with the MVP plum and was adjudged First Best Outside Spiker. Jaja Santiago, meanwhile, was Second Best Middler Blocker, while veteran playmaker Rubie de Leon was Best Setter.

Make no mistake about it, Gorayeb appreciated the honors given to her players.

“Deserving si Alyssa, deserving silang lahat na awardees,” said the multi-titled mentor. “But ‘yung achievement should be as a team kasi team sport naman ito.”

Valdez and Santiago were quick to validate the awards as they did the most damage for the Ultra Fast Hitters in their 25-16, 25-22, 19-25, 26-16 win before a crowd of 5,398 screaming fans at The Arena in San Juan to forge a winner-take-all showdown for the title on Sunday.

Valdez dropped 26 points against the Lady Troopers, while Santiago chipped in 20 as PLDT bounced back from a 25-13, 23-25, 25-27, 22-25 loss in the opener of the best-of-three title series.
