MAKATI Rep. Monsour Del Rosario revealed the party interested in purchasing the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex has no plan to demolish the entire property, and instead only wants to build a residential area while keeping the vital areas of the historic venue.
Del Rosario, a staunch critic of the proposed sale of the age-old complex, said the interested party also plans to retain and even refurbish most of the venues located inside the 10-hectare property, including the basketball stadium, baseball field, martial arts clubs, and track and football stadium.
“Ang aking understanding, hindi nila balak gibain ang buong Rizal. Ang alam ko, nung kausap ko sila, hindi nila balak wasakin ang buong complex,” said Del Rosario.
With these plans, Del Rosario now hopes for a win-win solution that will be beneficial particularly to the national athletes.
“I think we can come up with a win-win situation but I don’t know how the National Historical Institute will react to this but personally, ang personal battle cry ko is para sa mga atleta at mga training facilities nila,” said Del Rosario.
Del Rosario said he will even agree to the sale of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex for as long as another training facility that is accessible from Metro Manila will be built.
“Willing ako to let go of it. Was na ‘yan. What’s important is what’s now and what’s going in the future for the next generation of superstar athletes,” he said.
“Ang akin lang, gusto ko kahit papaano ma-retain ang area na facility and look, and the stories dahil kapag totally dinemolish ‘yan, para mo na rin pinatay ang spirit of the Filipino athlete,” added Del Rosario.
A sports museum honoring past Filipino athletes is also on the drawing board once the sale pushes through, according to Del Rosario. Certain floors will also be allotted for national sports associations to hold office inside the planned residential area.
Del Rosario said the party plans to make a presentation to all sports stakeholders after this year’s Southeast Asian Games when talks on the sale of the sports complex will resume.
“Antayin natin ‘yung presentation ng group na may balak i-purchase ‘yung Rizal,” said Del Rosario.
