Philippine Olympic Committee president Ricky Vargas said he will attend a session called by a majority of the members of the POC executive board on Tuesday 'to clear up matters in the interest of unity' ahead of the Southeast Asian Games.
In a statement released through POC communications director Ed Picson, Vargas also announced that he is cancelling a board meeting scheduled for Monday, June 17.
The POC head also said he will work out a 'mutually acceptable schedule' for a meeting with the executive board.
Last May 12, Vargas removed officials allied with former POC president Jose 'Peping' Cojuangco from sensitive positions in the Olympic body in a 'purge' that sparked a war of words in a POC general assembly meeting.
Vargas has since gained the support of Malacanang as he installed Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez as the chef de mission of the national delegation to the SEA Games in November.
Picson said a meeting between Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee officials headed by Alan Peter Cayetano and officials of National Sports Associations will also be pushing through on Monday.
Here is Vargas' statement in full:
“I am canceling the scheduled board meeting called by the POC secretary-general on the 17th of June to work out a mutually acceptable date for the executive board to meet.
In the meantime, I have decided to accept the call of the majority of executive board members for a session with me on the 18th of June to clear up matters in the interest of unity at this crucial stage of our preparations for the Southeast Asian Games.”
