OUTGOING Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia welcomed the appointment of William ‘Butch’ Ramirez, saying the government sports agency is in good hands with its returning chairman.
Garcia said Ramirez’s previous experience with the PSC will greatly help in the management of the government sports agency under the administration of incoming president Rodrigo Duterte.
Garcia and Ramirez have worked together in the past, both having been commissioners during the Estrada administration. Ramirez was later appointed chairman in 2005 during the time of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo with Garcia retained as commissioner.
Ramirez's second term as chairman begins on July 1.
“I would like to congratulate Butch Ramirez for being appointed to head the Commission,” said Garcia on Thursday during the coffee table book launch of the PSC.
Garcia said Philippine sports is in great hands with Ramirez since he is already familiar with the dynamics in Philippine sports, including dealings with the Philippine Olympic Committee and the national sports associations.
“It will be an asset for him because in my six years in the PSC, you have to have that feel with the athletes and you have to be able to get along with the POC and the 50-plus NSAs. Unless you have an experience in dealing with NSAs, it will be very hard for any chairman,” said Garcia.
“He has been dealing with the POC and I think this is a welcome appointment for all,” he added.
Garcia and Ramirez will be meeting on Tuesday to begin the transition.
“During that time, we will be giving him a list of things that was left hanging,” said Garcia.
