A GROUP of national sports associations (NSAs) is calling for changes within the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission, but noted it is not asking for the resignation of any sports official.
A total of 18 officials from different NSAs attended a four-hour meeting on Tuesday at the Manila Polo Club, discussing the state of Philippine sports and what the group can contribute to its improvement.
In a press statement, the group said among the issues that were raised are the need to amend the POC by-laws, reactivate POC commissions, disallow advisers from participating in POC activities, and review all NSA conflicts.
The group is also urging the PSC to build sports facilities, decent living quarters for athletes, streamline the operations of its NSA affairs and accounting and the procurement process of equipment and supplies.
"Nag-meeting 'yung mga NSAs para tumulong na maayos 'yung mga bagay-bagay at kung ano 'yung tingin namin problema sa POC at sa PSC," said karatedo secretary general Raymund Lee Reyes, one of the high-ranking officials in the meeting.
Among the sports officials at the meeting were Tom Carrasco of triathlon, Robert Bachmann of squash, Cynthia Carrion of gymnastics, Ed Picson of boxing, Karen Tanchangco-Caballero of sepak takraw and Dave Carter of judo.
Reyes made it clear there were no calls for changes in leadership, particularly long-serving POC president Jose 'Peping' Cojuangco, who is being criticized for the country's failures in multisports events including the Southeast Asian Games.
"Wala (calls for a leadership change) pero siyempre may tingin kaming kakulangan kaya nagkaisa kami para magtulungan," said Reyes.
The group will formally issue a position paper later this week during the POC general assembly on Friday.
"Sa tingin ko, wala namang inatake 'yung grupo. Mabuti 'yun na nagkakaisa 'yung mga NSAs para makatulong sa pagbabago sa both sides," said Reyes.
Reyes said the group gives NSAs a voice in issues concerning Philippine sports as well as evaluate how they run their respective sports associations.
"Kumikilos 'yung mga kabataan at 'yung mga active NSAs which is maganda. 'Yung mga NSAs, aware sila at willing sila mag-change kung kailangan mag-change. Inuna namin sarili namin kung may problema ba NSAs ko, pinag-aralan din namin 'yung mga rules ng PSC at POC, tingin ba namin may kailangan baguhin o i-request. Maganda 'yung pag-uusap at lahat kami nagkakaintindihan," said Reyes.
