RAMON Fernandez is set to file a libel case against Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco over the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president's allegations that he was involved in game-fixing during his playing days in the PBA.
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioner confirmed he will file the libel case in Cebu City, but will vowed to drop it on the condition that Cojuangco retracts his statement, makes a public apology and resigns as POC president.
“After talking to my lawyers, we've decided to file a libel case against Peping here in Cebu City," said the four-time PBA MVP. "I will drop the case if he retracts his statement, issues a public apology, and resigns as POC president.”
The POC declined to comment on Fernandez’s action.
Cojuangco said in an interview with the Manila Bulletin that he has inside knowledge on Fernandez's involvement in game-fixing through known ally Boy Saycon, who he said is a friend of Fernandez's longtime coach at Toyota, Dante Silverio.
Fernandez has since challenged Cojuangco to a vote among national athletes on who among them should step down from their respective positions. The PSC commissioner assured he will resign if the poll showed that athletes want him to leave his position.
