THE local government of Puerto Princesa City will be handing out cash incentives as it hosts the 16th Batang Pinoy National Championships which will begin on Sunday.
Puerto Princesa sports chief Rocky Austria said the city is eyeing a top 10 finish in the annual competition for kids aged 12 to 17 years old and organized by the Philippine Sports Commission and supported by mayor Lucilo Bayron.
"We have an ordinance that enables the city to give cash incentives to our Batang Pinoy achievers,” said Austria, adding that gold medalists will receive P50,000 each, silver P30,000, and bronze P20,000. “Me and Mayor Bayron would be happy if Puerto Princesa makes it to the top 10 of the overall standings.”
A total of 30 sports will be played in the grassroots sports event of the PSC, with the medal-rich events of athletics and swimming to be held at the Ramon V. Mitra Jr. Sports Complex, where the opening ceremony was held on Saturday.
Around 15,000 delegates, 11,000 of which athletes, are in Puerto Princesa for the multisport event that was already hosted by the city in 2002 and 2019.
”We would like to thank the Puerto Princesa City government led by Mayor Lucilo Bayron since our partnership with them has been seamless. Who would not want to do this with them again,” PSC chairman Richard Bachmann said.
“We are grateful to the PSC in its trust in allowing us to host the Batang Pinoy Nationals once more,” said Bayron.
