THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will be hiring a chef and nutritionist to run the existing canteens catering to national athletes inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Philsports complex, and other PSC-managed facilities.
The PSC will be providing the meals for free, said Chairman Butch Ramirez.
PSC deputy executive director and lawyer Guillermo Iroy added they hope the renovated canteens will be fully operational by June.
“We are planning to finish the rehabilitations of our canteens by May 30,” said Iroy.
Currently, the PSC gives P5,000 as monthly meal allowance to athletes, although the prevailing observation is that athletes do not get the proper nutrition when purchasing their own food.
The PSC planned to construct an athletes’ dining hall that will provide the proper nutrition to athletes, but the construction was delayed due to conflict arising due to the procurement law.
Ramirez said the PSC decided to rehabilitate the existing canteens instead while continuing to give the P5,000 meal allowance to the athletes.
“Hindi na namin kukunin ‘yung P5,000 meal allowance,” said Ramirez.
