PSC chairman William Ramirez hopes to see more athletes from Mindanao see action in the national games.

THE Philippine Sports Commission met with officials of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front on Saturday for the promotion of peace in Mindanao through sports.

PSC chairman William Ramirez had a meeting with MILF vice chairman Ghazali Jaafar in Camp Darapanan in Cotabato City where the government sports agency discussed possible areas of cooperation.

"The PSC is seriously focusing on grassroots development program with special attention on the Mindanao Sports for Peace to MILF," said Ramirez, adding that one of the main focus of the meeting is to create a sports program among the MILF youth and encourage them to compete in future Batang Pinoy and Philippine National Games competitions.

The PSC is encouraging the MILF to focus on selected sports such as pencak silat, kuntao silat, archery, and athletics.

"They should also have equal rights as other Filipino sports because they too are sportsman. They will join other sports events so they can prove that they can also produce sports superstars," said Ramirez.

Ramirez said Jaafar will seek permission from the MILF central committee to allow different programs within the group including sports science and building of sports structures.

"The training must be in accordance to their way of life and to liberate the Moro children from poverty through sports," Ramirez said.
