THE Philippine Sports Commission has made changes to its organizational structure a week after the arrest of an agency staff for stealing government money.
Part of the said revamp is Guillermo Iroy, Jr., who handles the agency’s legal affairs, being moved from deputy executive director to acting Executive Director. Merlita Ibay has been reinstalled as Deputy Executive Director for Finance and Administrative Services after holding the acting ED position. Queenie Evangelista is acting Deputy Executive Director heading the Bureau of Coordinating Secretariat and Support Services.
The PSC said further changes within the agency will be made within the week.
In a news release on Wednesday, the PSC “acknowledged lapses in the agency and vowed to ensure that necessary investigation, correction and sanction are done” after the arrest of Paul Michael Ignacio last week for payroll fraud, allegedly obtaining P14 million from the sports agency by using the names of athletes and coaches not qualified for monthly allowances from the government.
Ignacio was assigned at the PSC Personnel Department.
“As the highest accountable official of the agency, I take responsibility to effect changes, to make sure that there are no gaps in the organization,” said PSC chairman William Ramirez on Wednesday.
“I feel sad, frustrated, and hurt but we all have to have composure,” he added, while appealing to support from all stakeholders and partners.
The PSC has also sought the help of the Office of the Solicitor General with the investigation.
