THE PHILIPPINE Sports Commission believes a `national open’ should be held in all sports to determine the composition of the national teams to be sent to different international competitions.
PSC chairman Ricardo Garcia said the make-up of Team Philippines to big events such as the Southeast Asian Games and the Asian Games should come from the winners of the national open competitions.
“Our team should be composed of the best of the best, and we can only get the best if we hold a national open where everyone will converge during a certain date and a certain place,” said Garcia on Monday.
In previous international meets, Garcia said the selection of Team Philippines is composed mainly of athletes from the national pool, leaving the others, especially those from the provinces, with no chance to vie for slots in tournaments such as the SEA Games and Asiad.
Garcia believes an open competition is the fairest way to determine the composition of the national pool to be bankrolled by the PSC, and at the same time, a way to discover new talent from the provinces.
“Less cost ito, gagastusan na lang kapag nanalo na,” said Garcia.
The PSC chairman said the plan is partly being realized through the Philippine National Games where national athletes are required to compete against entries from local clubs, cities, and provinces.
Several national sports associations, however, still choose not to participate in the PNG for various reasons.
