GENERAL SANTOS CITY – Precious Faye V. Hundap of Iloilo City had a Batang Pinoy debut to remember, capturing her second gold medal in girls’ cycling at the Albert Morrow Boulevard.

The 16-year-old Hundap ruled the road race on Tuesday, just a day after winning the gold medal in the individual time trial on Monday in only the first national competition of her young career.

Hundap, from Jaro, Iloilo City, was surprised to win the event as she felt that competition was tough. She mentioned the likes of silver medalist Yvonne Alejado of Passi City, Iloilo, sister of national road race champion Tash, and criterium silver medalist Davine Novo of Cagayan, who finished fifth after dealing with mechanical trouble.

Hundap timed one hour, 19.53 seconds in winning the race, outsprinting Alejado and Shiela Marie Rapada of Ormoc City in the dash to the line.

“Tsamba lang,” said the soft-spoken Hundap. “Hirap mag-break away sa kanila. Malakas lahat. Si Davine sana kaso nasiraan siya.”

It is hard to argue though that the two gold medals were out of sheer luck.

Hundap registered 26 minutes and six seconds in the individual time trial on Monday at the city hall, beating silver holder Aikabelle Clementir of Northern Samar by nine seconds, and bronze medalist Nishie Anne Arciaga of Parañaque City by 22 seconds.

Once focused on volleyball as a hobby, Hundap took up cycling around two years ago and loved it so much she became good enough to compete in local tournaments.

She trained for three months for the Batang Pinoy without neglecting her studies as a Grade 11 student at University of Iloilo.

“Masaya eh, maraming nakikilala,” said Hundap on why she enjoys cycling.
