THE Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) will appeal the decision of a Pasig City court ordering a reelection for president and chairman of the country’s Olympic body on February 23.

POC first vice-president Joey Romasanta said the board has given its lawyers the green light to file an appeal during Wednesday’s executive board meeting.

“The board has given the lawyers authority to file a petition for review before the Court of Appeals and with an application for temporary restraining order (TRO) and preliminary injunction,” said Romasanta.

The Pasig City Regional Trial Court has ordered a reelection after declaring the 2016 POC polls that gave Cojuangco a fourth term as president null and void.

The court case stemmed from the POC election committee's decision to disqualify boxing association head Ricky Vargas and cycling's Bambol Tolentino from running for president and chairman, respectively, on the grounds that the two are not 'active members' of the POC general assembly.

The court also ordered a new round of election for the chairmanship between Tolentino and Cojuangco ally and triathlon secretary general Tom Carrasco.

Romasanta, however, said the POC will have to follow the decision of the courts if it denied the appeal for the TRO.

“Whether you like it or not, kapag sinabi ng korte, kung hindi na-injunct, tuloy ang eleksyon,” said Romasanta.
