PHILIPPINE Olympic Committee (POC) chairman Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino on Wednesday said he intends to call for a special election for the position of president vacated by Ricky Vargas.
In a statement, Tolentino cited the POC by-laws specifically Article 7, Section 6 which states that the chairman, within 30 days from the date of vacancy, may call a special election if the successors – the first vice president and the second vice president – are not qualified to be the successor.
Tolentino, who was part of Vargas’ ticket when they ran in the reelections last February 2018, said he will formally issue a call for a special election in the extraordinary general assembly meeting on June 25.
Tolentino said that under the bylaws, the POC president must be the incumbent president of an Olympic sport-national sports association. Joey Romasanta is currently the vice president of the volleyball federation.
POC second vice president Jeff Tamayo is the president of soft tennis, which is not an Olympic sport.
Vargas on Tuesday stepped down as president of the POC, citing 'corporate and family matters,' ending his 16-month tenure as head of the Olympic body.
