DARWIN, Australia – The Philippines grabbed two bronzes in sepak takraw Thursday in the 2019 Arafura Games at the Darwin Convention Centre.
The men’s doubles team of Dominic James Sagosoy, Aljon Yipon, and Jundy Puton won over India, while the women’s doubles team of Allyssa Bandoy, Josefina Maat, and Aisa Sabellita beat Sabah, Malaysia, both in straight sets to capture the bronzes.
The Philippines were relegated to the bronze medal match after dropping their semifinal matches against University Putra Malaysia and Indonesia respectively.
Meanwhile, Jhon Christian Noces beat Francis Mark Flordeliza of Northern Territory via split decision to advance into the semifinals of the men’s boxing welterweight class, assuring him of at least a bronze medal.
Shera Mae Jacinto, the lone female boxer in the delegation, lost via split decision over April Franks of Victoria in the women’s flyweight quarterfinals.
The men’s basketball team defeated Johor, Malaysia, 86-64, to sweep the preliminaries.
Hachaliah Gilbuena and Johnrel Amora beat Australia 10, 21-12, 21-13, to clinch a spot in the round of 16 of the men’s beach volleyball tournament.
