Philippine National Games format modified to weed out nuisance participants

    Dec 17, 2014

THE Philippine Sports Commission is changing the format of the Philippine National Games next year, with a regional qualifying tournament slated before the national finals now set to be held in November.

PSC chairman Ritchie Garcia said the move was done in order to have all the best athletes from different regions in the national finals, and preventing “nuisance” participants from competing in the culminating event.

Previous editions of the PNG were held during the summer, usually after the Palarong Pambansa, and open to practically anyone regardless of the athletes’ background, hometown, and abilities.

National athletes will still be required to compete in the PNG.

“There were times where participants were being outclassed by national athletes. The quality of competition is compromised,” said Garcia.

The format is now similar to its Batang Pinoy competition for kids where the best from regional qualifiers advancing to the finals. Like the Batang Pinoy, the PNG is being used by the PSC to discover new athletes for the national team.
