    PH badminton team gets shot at gold medal in Arafura Games

    DARWIN, Australia – The Philippine badminton team beat Cambodia, 5-3, on Friday at the Darwin Convention Centre to advance to the gold-medal match of 2019 Arafura Games.

    The Filipino shuttlers will take on East Kalimantan on Saturday, 1 p.m. (11:30 a.m. Manila time) at the Darwin Convention Center looking to add to the 30 golds the Philippines has won before the Games formally closes on Saturday night.

    Arthur Samuel Salvado defeated Tep Chanmara, 21-11, 12-21, 21-10, in the first men’s singles match while Estarco Bacalo won over Sok Rikreay, 21-11, 21-17, in the second singles before Karylle Kaye Molina beat Leng Davy, 21-11, 21-14, in the second women’s singles match.

    The mixed doubles match saw Jackie Lyn Pana and Salvado beating Lim Pengcheng and Ung Voleaktery, 21-13, 21-13, and Bacalso and Molina winning over Chanmara and Ker Pechhoravy, 24-22, 15-21, 21-17.

    John Macas will also battle for a gold medal on Saturday in the men’s boxing flyweight class, while the men’s basketball team faces Northern Territory Top End in the championship match.

    Johnrel Amora and Hachaliah Gilbuena survived Tuvalo, 17-21, 21-12, 15-11, to clinch a berth in the semifinals and a chance at a medal finish in the men’s beach volleyball tournament.

    The men’s regu team beat Jakarta University Indonesia, 2-1, to move one win away from a semifinal berth in sepak takraw.
