Four golds in eventful final day for PH in Asian Para Games

SANDER Severino, Ernie Gawilan and Arthus Bucay led the Philippines final assault as the country captured four gold medals on Friday in the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Severino won another individual title, topping the rapid P1, and led the Philippine team in winning the rapid P1 gold with Henry Roger Lopez and Jasper Roy. Severino wound up as the most bemedalled Filipino athlete in the quadrennial meet with four golds.

Gawilan claimed his third gold medal, clocking four minutes, 51 seconds in the men’s 400-meter freestyle S7 to notch a new Asian Para Games record. Gawilan had also won the men’s 200-meter individual medley and the men’s 100-meter backstroke.

Bucay started the gold rush for the Philippines on Friday, ruling the men’s C5 4,000 meters individual pursuit. Saori Sufyan of Indonesia and Mohammad Mahdi of Iran captured the silver and bronze respectively.

The Philippines had 10 gold, eight and 11 bronze medals for 11th place in the medal standings following the penultimate day of the meet.

Also winning gold for the Philippines were Redor Menandro, Arman Subaste, and Israel Peligro in the men’s team standard B2/B3 in chess, and Kim Ian Chi in the mixed singles of bowling.
