ALLAIN Ganapin won a bout in taekwondo before being ousted in his next match, as Ernie Gawilan finished last in his event in the swimming competitions of the Paralympic Games in Paris.
Ganapin defeated Hadi Hassanzada of Refugee Paralympic Team, 22-13, in the round-of-32 match of the men’s K44 -80kg division, his first-ever bout in the Paralympics at the Grand Palais.
Ganapin later bowed out after 12-9 decision against Abulfaz Abuzarli of Azerbaijan in the round-of-16, but is already a marked improvement from his 2020 campaign where he was forced to withdraw after contracting COVID-19.
The Filipino para taekwondo also overcame an early 8-5 deficit to win the bout over Hassanzada.
Meanwhile, Gawilan finished last among six swimmers in Heat 2 of the men’s 200m individual medley SM7 with a time of 2:56.39 at the Paris La Defense Arena. He finished 11th overall and failed to make it in the final eight.
Gawilan will return to the pool on Monday in the men’s 400m freestyle S7.
