YOUNG athletes 15 years old and below in the Visayas battle for honors in the fifth and final qualifying leg of the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission Batang Pinoy 2012 starting Tuesday at the Leyte Sports Development Center in Tacloban City.
The event features 13 sports — arnis, athletics, badminton, boxing, chess, dancesports, karatedo, swimming, softball, table tennis, taekwondo, lawn tennis and weightlifting — with the top performers qualifying for the Batang Pinoy National Finals slated Dec. 5-9 in Iloilo City.
Centerpiece athletics and swimming will be staged at the newly built Leyte Sports Academy, along with lawn tennis and weightlifting. Table tennis will be at the LSA Social Hall, and badminton will be at the brand new LSA Badminton Hall.
Leyte National High School will host arnis and dancesports, while taekwondo competitions will be held at the Capitol Gym. Chess will be staged at the Capitol Session Hall, while crowd-drawer boxing will be at Robinsons Place Tacloban. Softball games will be held at the Government Center.
Previous legs were held in the National Capital Region (Marikina City), Northern Luzon (Pangasinan), Southern Luzon (Mindoro Oriental) and Mindanao (Dapitan City).
The gold and silver winners in the qualifying legs automatically earn slots to the National Finals.
