SAN JUAN, Ilocos Sur — Mark Nonoy of Western Visayas sent shockwaves through the 2018 Palarong Pambansa secondary basketball tournament when he scored 43 points on Thursday in a quarterfinal match against Northern Mindanao.
Nonoy scored the tournament high as Western Visayas defeated Northern Mindanao in overtime, 104-99, in a splendid performance that came just after the Iloilo cager committed to join the University of Santo Tomas Tigers in the UAAP.
“Ah, si (Russell) Westbrook?” said one official when SPIN.ph asked for confirmation that the 5-foot-8 Nonoy indeed hit a scoring milestone at this annual conclave.
The incoming University of Santo Tomas high school cager already had 36 points in regulation before scoring seven points in overtime to lead Western Visayas, which faces Davao Region in the semifinals.
The game was ongoing at posting time.
The 17-year-old Nonoy was described by Western Visayas coach Vincent ‘Bing’ Conlu as a three-point shooter with tremendous speed.
