THREE gymnasts of the Davao Region Athletic Association were rewarded by city officials after returning P50,000 cash they found near the athletes’ quarters recently at Tagum City National Comprehensive High School in Mankilam.
Brian Albert Buhian, 15, found a bundle of money under the bench of the school kiosk after buying some personal necessities outside the campus on the evening of April 18.
The school is adjacent to the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex, the main venue of the Palarong Pambansa set May 3 to 9.
His teammates Janliver Estabaya, 14, and Louie Villacorte, Jr., 16, approached him. No one else was around, but the three all agreed to give the money back.
It turned out the money was for the expenses of their fellow Davao Eagles athletes coming from Panabo City.
Members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Davao del Norte recognized the honesty of the athletes, and contributed some money as incentive.
Buhian, the son of an egg vendor and seventh in a brood of 12, said he never thought about keeping the money to himself.
“We’re proud of what they did. Not only athleticism, sports also teaches good manners, honesty and other virtues,” said Jenielito Atillo, spokesperson of the Davraa.
