Marikina threatens to sue over inverted flag in Palaro drone show

PALARONG Pambansa 2023 host city Marikina has threatened legal action after a drone show during the event's closing ceremony at the Marikina Sports Center on Saturday displayed the Philippine flag upside down.

Live photos from the Marikina City Public Information Office's Facebook stream show an inverted depiction of the flag, with the red above the blue.

Shortly after the drone show, the Marikina PIO issued an official statement condemning the incident with an intent to sue drone supplier DroneTech Philippines.

"Mariing kinondena ng Marikina City Government sa pangunguna ni Mayor Marcy Teodoro ang pangyayari at pinapakasuhan ang Dronetech PH upang madetermina ang mga legal na pananagutan ng kumpanya kasama na rin ang mga kalakip na kaparusahan at multa," the city government said.

    DroneTech Philippines released a public apology baring the events that led to the 'grave error' during the Palaro's closing ceremony.

    The Palaro drone supplier detailed how the lighting mistake could have been avoided if it wasn't for 'severe weather conditions and signal interference' in the area that prevented them from conducting prior programming tests.

    "The company is sincerely sorry for this unintentional error in programming. As God is our witness, we have innocently made this mistake and have no malice or bad intentions on anyone and the people of Marikina and the Philippines as a whole," DroneTech said.

    The drone supplier vowed to observe 'proper protocols in testing' moving forward to prevent errors in its future shows.

    Palaro 2023 formally wrapped up hostilities with the National Capital Region extending its dominance with a 16th consecutive overall crown (85 gold, 74 silver, 55 bronze), beating Western Visayas.
