    Lydia De Vega-Mercado to be honored with Lifetime Achievement Award at Palaro

    VIGAN, Ilocos Sur — Lydia De Vega-Mercado will be honored by the Department of Education on SUnday during the opening rites of the 2018 Palarong Pambansa at the President Elpidio Quirino Stadium.

    The Lifetime Achievement Award will be received by former De La Salle Lady Spiker Stephanie Mercado and brother Jonathan on behalf of their mother, who is now based in Singapore.

    Known as Asia’s fastest woman in the 1980s, De Vega-Mercado won the 100m and 200m gold medals in the 1983 and 1987 Asian Athletics Championship and the 1982 and 1986 Asian Games 100m run.

    De Vega-Mercado is also a nine-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist in different events—100m, 200m, 400m, and long jump.

    The opening ceremony will also be attended by four-time World Cup bowling champion Paeng Nepomuceno and Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre.

    Rio Olympics silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz is also set to attend the Palaro opening rites.
