BANTAY, Ilocos Sur — Calabarzon’s Veruel Verdadero and Jessel Lumapas completed a sweep of the century dash in the secondary division of the 2018 Palarong Pambansa athletics competitions on Wednesday at the President Elpidio Quirino Stadium.
The 16-year-old Verdadero won his second Palaro gold in the 100-meter dash, clocking 10.55 seconds to break the previous record of 10.74 set by Feberoy L. Kasi in 2016.
It is yet to be confirmed as a national record by the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association, but Verdadero’s time also beats the national boys mark of 10.6 seconds set by Julio Bayaban during the 1979 National Open in Marikina.
Lumapas took the girls gold with a time of 11.99 seconds, only .09 seconds short of breaking the 1994 Palaro record of Nancy Navalta.
Verdadero is currently a member of the Philippine juniors team, having competed recently in the Southeast Asian Youth Championship in Bangkok.
In the 400m hurdles, Jerico Pacis of National Capital Region clocked 54.81 seconds to take the secondary boys gold, while Riza Jane Vallente of Central Visayas took the gold in the secondary girls with a time of 1:01.45, besting Bernalyn Bejoy of Western Visayas by 0.43 seconds.
In the secondary girls 2,000m walk, Laurize Jeanne Wangkay of Calabarzon bagged the gold with a time of 10:44.44.
